The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is important when we seek healing through Jesus Christ.  Prior to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council in the 1960's this sacrament was called Extreme Unction or, more commonly, Last Rites.  Catholics received Extreme Unction in the final hours of life, right before death.

Our contemporary understanding is that we need God's healing presence multiple times in our lives, so we can receive the Anointing of the Sick as many times as we need it.  People may ask for this sacrament before surgery.  Also, people may be seeking physical, psychological, or spiritual healing.  Any Catholic who wants to receive the healing power of God in their lives may request to be anointed.
